The calender of saints puts March 3rd as the Holy Cunigunde’s name day. As no other did she play such an important role for the history of Merseburg. After all, she married Duke Henry of Bavaria in 999, who later became emperor. Besides her husband, Cunigunde is regarded as the founder of Merseburg Cathedral, with numerous pictures of her in the cathedral proving her worship. On an exclusive tour we want to trace her steps. Who was this woman who gave the day its name? There is a variety of mystical legends and hints in the cathedral about her person. The ploughshare, for example, is one of Cunigunde’s most prominent attributes and sign of the most famous story about her. Could she really deny allegations of adultery against herself with only the ploughshare?
