The Protestant parish of Merseburg invites you to a solemn service in the cathedral crypt to mark the 998th anniversary of the consecration of Merseburg Cathedral. In 968, Otto I founded the diocese of Merseburg, thus honouring the vow he made before the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. After the dissolution of the diocese in 981, it was re-established in 1004 by Emperor Henry II. On 1 October 1021, the cathedral was finally consecrated in the presence of the imperial couple Henry II and Cunegonde, an event that will soon be celebrating its 1000th anniversary.
