New exhibition in Merseburg Cathedral
As a rule, the holdings of an archive are not created through donations and acquisitions, but through the transfer of archive-worthy documents from the associated administrations and offices. As a historical archive, the Cathedral Abbey Archive has not received any documents from the Cathedral Abbey administration since 1930. The Cathedral Abbey Library, on the other hand, is constantly growing, as new books are constantly being received for current research as well as through specimen copies. For both institutions, however, it is worth taking a look at the second-hand bookshops and auction houses to supplement the holdings. There are always references to books, maps, views and archival documents relating to Merseburg. Sometimes these are donated or made possible by generous donors. It is also possible for the cathedral foundations to acquire items themselves.
In recent years, numerous pieces have been acquired and donated and are now permanently displayed in the specially designed Exhibition "Gifted and acquired. New additions to the Merseburg Cathedral Archive and Library" will be shown in Merseburg Cathedral.
In addition to the new objects - books, maps, copper engravings, a facsimile and postcards - the exhibition explains the background to the donors, the history of the acquisition and its significance for the Merseburg Cathedral Abbey Archive and Library.
