On the Open Monument Day on 11 September 2022, the European Romanesque Centre We cordially invite you to an open day! Between 11:00 and 17:00, you will be able to see the photo exhibition "Romanesque in England" and a presentation to go with it.
The exhibition uses selected photographs to reveal the last traces of the Anglo-Saxons and Normans in buildings that have long since been remodelled or are in ruins. Their inventiveness and love of experimentation still provide moments of surprise today - in stark contrast to the European continent. Discover the unconventional appearance of Romanesque architecture in England for yourself.
The idea for the exhibition arose during an excursion by the Institute for European Art History and Archaeology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Under the leadership of the first chair of the ERZ, Prof. Dr Ute Engel, the study group travelled through England for a fortnight, exploring the medieval cathedrals from Canterbury and Durham to Worcester and Salisbury. Antje Seeger captured their impressions with her camera.
