For the Merseburg bishops, the 13th century was characterised by dwindling proximity to the king and the resulting expansion of ownership, but also by an intense struggle with the Wettin dynasty for supremacy in the area between Merseburg and Leipzig. The cathedral underwent extensive expansion. In August, the Jahr1000 treasures display rare, outstanding items that emphasise the increasing influence of the diocese. A portable altar from the early 13th century has been preserved in the cathedral archives, which shows how masses could be celebrated even in remote areas of the diocese. The increasing self-confidence of the cathedral chapter is also evident in a large seal stamp showing the main saints of the cathedral.
