Merseburg is the place of correspondence for the anniversary: "The Emperor's last journey - the climax and end of Otto the Great's reign in 973".

Thanks to support from the "EU REACT digitalisation cultural investment programme", Merseburg Cathedral will be optimally equipped with a new locking system in terms of safety and hygiene.

Last December, the United Cathedral Foundations of Merseburg and Naumburg and the Collegiate Abbey of Zeitz were able to purchase a fragment from the chronicle of Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg (975/976-1018) at auction with the help of the Cultural Foundation of the Federal States, the State of Saxony-Anhalt and private donors.

In 2022, 27,720 visitors came to the Merseburg Imperial Cathedral. "With the visitor numbers from 2022, we are almost approaching the figures before the coronavirus pandemic," says Dr Holger Kunde, Director of the United Cathedral Foundations, looking back on the past year. "This is mainly due to the consecration anniversary 'Consecrated for eternity. 1000 years of the consecration of Merseburg Cathedral' in 2021, which shone far beyond Merseburg and the state borders and helped to draw more attention to Merseburg Cathedral and its city," continued Dr Holger Kunde.

The Merseburg Organ Festival is one of the major organ festivals in Europe. They have a firm place in the musical life of Saxony-Anhalt and attract numerous music lovers from all over the world to the Merseburg Imperial Cathedral every year in September.
