The 52nd edition of the Merseburger Orgeltage (Merseburg Organ Days) which centres on the magnificent Ladegast organ in Merseburg Cathedral. From 10 to 18 September, the audience can look forward to top-class concerts with organists from all over Europe.
In 2022, we commemorate the 350th anniversary of the death of the most important German composer of the 17th century - Heinrich Schütz.
It is the 125th anniversary of the death of Johannes Brahms. We also frequently encounter his songs, choral and organ works in the programmes of the 52nd Merseburg Organ Festival.
We also commemorate the 225th birthday of the great song composer Franz Schubert with a mass in the first festive service of the Organ Days, a night concert in the cathedral and chamber music in the baroque church in Burgliebenau.
Composer, conductor and writer - ETA Hoffmann, a multi-talented man, died in Berlin in June 1822, 200 years ago. Who doesn't know the story of "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", to which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his famous ballet music? Excerpts from it in a version for 4 hands and 4 feet for organ open the "Fairytale Music Night", through which Axel Thielmann accompanies us with texts by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann.
One of the innovators of 20th century Protestant church music will also be commemorated: the Leipzig composer and church musician Johannes Weyrauch, who was born in Leipzig 125 years ago.
The two oratorios "Paulus" and "Elijah" by the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who died 175 years ago, will provide the framework for the 52nd Merseburg Organ Festival from 10 to 18 September. In a special way, these works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who died so young, reflect the struggle for the "right path" in life and in faith: the path from Saul to Paul, the courage of a prophet who proclaims uncomfortable truths, as in art and culture - always topical in the reality of our lives.
Detailed information on the programme can be found on the Website of the Merseburg Organ Festival.
