„From Pantaleon to Cimbalom – A Musical History“ invites you to a special musical journey of discovery in the Sitte Gallery. At the centre is the cimbalom, an instrument whose roots reach back to the historical pantaleon, a large baroque form of the dulcimer, which was popularised by Pantaleon Hebenstreit around 1700.
Enikő Ginzery brings an instrument to Merseburg whose history is surprisingly linked to the region. While the modern concert cimbalom only took its current form in Budapest in the 19th century; as early as around 1697, Pantaleon Hebenstreit developed the dulcimer into a concert instrument in the Merseburg area – an important step in the prehistory of the cimbalom.
With Enikő Ginzery, you get to experience an artist who has established the cimbalom as a fully-fledged concert instrument, far beyond folkloric associations. The musician, born in Bratislava, studied in Bratislava, Budapest and Saarbrücken; her repertoire spans from early music to the present day, and her playing is considered sonically imaginative and interpretively innovative.
Your performance gains a special, additional layer precisely here in Merseburg: when Enikő Ginzery makes the cimbalom resound in the cathedral, it's not only Hungarian musical tradition and virtuosic contemporary art that meet, but also distant and recent musical history in a place more closely connected to this family of instruments than one might initially assume.
