Michael Schönheit shapes the evening on both the historical Ladegast organ and the piano, making audible how closely Liszt's music is connected to the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The famous Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H, which is shocking Prelude on „Weeping, lamentation, sorrow, fear“ in the piano version as well as in the arrangement for the Merseburg Cathedral organ by Alexander Winterberger. With the Variations on the basso continuo the Bach cantata and the Crucified Liszt's intensive engagement with suffering, solace, and transcendence is particularly impressively experienced in the Mass in B minor. The grand finale is the monumental Fantasy and Fugue on „Ad nos, ad salutarem undam“, one of the most significant organ works of the 19th century.
