The Merseburg Charms - function, application and effect

No one can escape the strange yet palpable mysticism of Merseburg's spells. As the only pagan incantations preserved in Germany, they are Merseburg's greatest spell. But how do historians and linguists look at this unique written document? What do the Merseburg incantations tell us about customs, the Old High German language, and the beliefs of the pre-Christian era? The Germanist and medievalist Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Beck knows the Merseburg Spells better than anyone else and has subjected them to a wide variety of questions in his research. In a lecture he will share his findings with us.
