„Thietmar's return to Merseburg - music and the history of rulers from the Middle Ages“
with:
Udo Schenk, Speaker
Capella Antiqua Bambergensis (Music of the Middle Ages)
Following the great public success in 2025, the Imperial Cathedral of Merseburg will once again be the venue for a very special hour of music and history with the famous chronicler Thietmar von Merseburg on 18 July 2026.
The actor and narrator Udo Schenk (known to millions of viewers from the ARD series „In aller Freundschaft“) and the ensemble Capella Antiqua invite the audience on a new and fascinating journey into the era of the mighty emperors and their clever wives.
In his role as chronicler „Thietmar von Merseburg“, Udo Schenk wanders through the centuries and opens windows into times long past. He was the most important historian of his era and allows the audience to participate in the key events of his time. Thietmar provides deep insights into the lives of his Ottonian kings and emperors and the diplomatic skills of their clever and influential wives in the Imperial Cathedral of Merseburg. They were often the ones who decided on war and peace, who forged coalitions with great skill and diplomacy and thus ensured the continued existence of the empire and their ruling family.
What did the music of this period sound like? On more than 20 historical musical instruments, most of which come from the workshop of Andreas Spindler, the Capella Antiqua spans a musical arc from the Orient to the Occident and forms the sonorous foundation for Thietmar's stories of rulers.
