Kuckenburg Castle near Esperstedt is located around 5 kilometres north-east of Querfurt on an impressive mountain spur, the Kranzberg. It has been documented in written sources as a medieval fortification since it was mentioned in the Hersfeld tithe register in the 9th century and was handed over to Count Esiko by Otto III in 999. Since 2005, the site has been the subject of a joint project between the Department of Pre- and Protohistoric Archaeology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology. In the course of this research, the remains of the medieval castle were uncovered alongside a large number of prehistoric settlement and burial artefacts.
The historian Dr Enrico Paust will share the latest findings with you in his lecture.
