In 1015, Bishop Thietmar laid the foundation stone for Merseburg Cathedral and just 6 ½ years later, the magnificent building was completed. From today's perspective, it is hard to imagine how the medieval master builders were able to create such amazing buildings as the imperial cathedral in Merseburg. In our adventure tour, we therefore want to travel back in time over 1000 years. Using a small amount of surviving information about methods and techniques, we will explore the rules that governed the construction of the cathedral. Were there building plans and architects, cranes and scaffolding? How were measurements taken? What was the knotted cord used for and what is the Indian circle all about? We uncover the secrets of the building process of a bygone era.

The tour will take place on Saturday, 31 January 2026 and Sunday, 1 February 2026 at 4 pm.

We recommend early booking via our Ticket shop or our Visitor Centre
